MSN rejects .Mac

Microsoft's instant messaging network is rejecting users who have signed up using a .Mac email address.

Macworld has received reports which indicate that existing users of MSN (now Windows Live) have been knocked off the network when they try to sign in if they have originally used a .Mac address to sign up for the service.

In a moment's hubris, Microsoft insists users change their email address before using the service.

"Because of a recent system update, you must change the email address that you use to sign in to Windows Live Messenger. Until you change your email address, you won’t be able to use Windows Live Messenger," an error message explains.

Microsoft explains the changes were required as a security measure because Office Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 enables messaging between the Windows Live Messenger Service and corporate IM systems.

Microsoft has put together a support page for affected users.

Ex-MSNBC.com Head to Run MSN.com

Microsoft publicly announced Thursday that it had named John Nicol to head its MSN.com division, who pledged to push for increased investment and "and acquisitions if we need it," however he declined to be more specific.

Nicol had previously served as the head of MSNBC.com several years ago.

Although he has been with Microsoft since shortly after it announced a major reorganization last year, Thursday was the first day the company had publicly acknowledged his hiring. Nicol replaces Hadi Partovi, who left to start his own business.

Partovi rejoined Microsoft in 2002 after leaving to focus on personal projects in 1999. He was credited with starting several initiatives including MSN Music, start.com, and the MSN.com revisions.

IE Gets Two New MSN Toolbar Add-Ins

Microsoft on Wednesday released betas of two add-ins for its MSN Search Toolbar. One add-in allows users to store and access their Windows Live Favorites in a sidebar adjacent to the browser window, while the other offers thumbnail previews of search results before visiting the actual pages.

The Windows Live Favorites add-in enables users to import their current favorites from both Internet and MSN Explorer, and use them right away through the service. New sites can be added with a single click, and favorites can be searched by name, address or keyword.

Users who take advantage of the Windows Live Favorites service would be able to access their saved Web pages from any computer with an Internet connection, including machines based on operating systems other than Windows, Microsoft has said.

The preview add-in allows users of MSN Search to view thumbnails of Web sites beside the links in each search result. Mousing over the thumbnail will magnify the image for closer inspection. Microsoft said this would speed up the search process by eliminating the need to click on every result.

These two plug-ins join three other pre-existing ones for the MSN Search Toolbar, including weather, games and an anti-phishing add-in.

The Windows Live Favorites add-in requires MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search and Microsoft Windows XP or Server 2003 with IE6. The search preview add-in will work on Windows 2000 and Internet Explorer 5.01 or later.

MSN Virtual Earth Launches Tomorrow

Google maps "killer" MSN Virtual Earth launches tomorrow to a everyone wondering whether it will beat down Google Maps .

One disadvantage MSN Virtual Earth has is that it's launching (in true Microsoft style) with only US support. Those of us who happen to live in "Europe" (or other places in the World) will have to wait for a while until MSN updates its pages to support our areas.

MSN Virtual Earth was switched on today temporarily to test production servers according to a member of the Virtual Earth team. Since the slip up it has since been turned off and ready to launch properly tomorrow.

Virtual Earth introduces a number of interface enhancements to the now-familiar draggable aerial web map, such as the ability to zoom in using your mouse scroll wheel, and a Location Finder to determine your real-world location.

For those who managed to take a sneak peak at Virtual Earth the response is positive. Here's to tomorrow

Microsoft Tests New MSN Shopping Site

Microsoft has begun beta testing a new MSN Shopping portal, which serves as a price comparison engine for different online shops. The revamped site boasts 60 times the number of stores and five times the number of items, along with millions of new featured offers.

Although Microsoft is utilizing PriceGrabber.com for most of its shopping results, the company has increased the number of merchants it works with directly. The decision to work with a third party revolved around merchant ratings and reviews, Microsoft says, as the company did not want to start with a clean slate

MSN Search Toolbar rolls out more international versions

We received a couple of comments in response to the recent blog posting which announced the availability of international versions of MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search. Specifically, we were asked “where’s the India version”, and “where’s the China version”. I’d love to say that we took those comments to heart and rushed to prepare new international versions for you, but the truth of the matter is that we’ve been hard at work on expanding the set of international versions for some time.

Our team put a lot of late nights and weekends into this release, and we had people in USA, Ireland, Japan, Korea, China and India working on it. Due to the wide variety of timezones, it meant some group of people was working on this release around the clock, no matter what time it was here in Redmond. Regardless of our geographic location, we are all very happy to have completed this international roll-out, and we’re looking forward to seeing your feedback!

We have just released several more versions to the web. This new release comprises an additional 25 locales, for a total availability of MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search in 37 distinct locales and in 15 languages.

We are super-excited to make these available to you. Here's a list of all the sites where you can download the toolbar:

Australia, Austria, Belgium (Dutch & French versions), Brazil, Canada (English & French versions), China (Simplified Chinese), Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR (Traditional Chinese), India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korean, Latin America, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Phillipines, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland (French & German versions), Taiwan (Traditional Chinese), UK, USA (English & Spanish versions), and Global/Worldwide

Q&A: MSN Hotmail Adds Safety E-Alerts for E-Mail Authentication

E-mail scams, whether they involve spamming or the more malicious "spoofing" and "phishing," continue to rob consumers and organizations of their security, privacy and financial assets. A study conducted this year by Ferris Research reports that 80 to 90 percent of all e-mail messages are spam, and will cost businesses worldwide approximately US$50 billion in 2005. E-mail authentication technologies play a promising role in reducing the level of spam by providing helping provide detailed information about the source of email. However, the industry as a whole, as well as organizations in general, must adopt this technology to ultimately protect the online ecosystem.

Microsoft has been working with its customers and others across the industry to better protect e-mail as an essential communications tool. The company is embracing e-mail authentication technologies like the Sender ID Framework (SIDF) and continues to invest in anti-spamming, anti-spoofing and anti-phishing initiatives. In January, MSN Hotmail implemented SIDF, which in combination with filtering technology such as Microsoft SmartScreen helps intercept more than 3.2 billion deceptive e-mail messages a day before they reach Hotmail users' inboxes. In continuing in its commitment to consumer safety, Microsoft today announced it is providing warning alerts visible via a new safety bar in the MSN Hotmail user interface on e-mail in which the sender can not be authenticated.

MSN Sponsors Anti-Piracy Film Contest

MSN UK is holding a contest for both youths and adults aimed at teaching the evils of intellectual property theft - an issue Microsoft is constantly battling to protect its software. The short film competition, aptly titled Thought Thieves, requires entrants to make a commercial-length video about how IP theft affects society.

"Think about it: what would a world look like without protection for intellectual property?" Microsoft asks. The winning films will receive Ł2,000 of film and video equipment vouchers; runners-up will receive a free trip to London where all of the entries will be screened at a special event.

"Looks like the idea is to tell a compelling story in rather quick fashion why stealing copyrighted material is bad. In a nice touch, the competition is not restricted to 18 years and older. Microsoft has a second 14-17 year-old category," noted Jupiter Research senior analyst Joe Wilcox.

Microsoft grapples with attack on MSN Korea site

Microsoft has discovered an apparent attempt by hackers to steal user information from its South Korean MSN Web site and has taken action to repair the problem.

The attack was directed at the news section of the MSN Korea Web site, said Adam Sohn, a company spokesman. Microsoft was alerted Tuesday morning that the site had been compromised and took the site offline for a few hours to fix the problem, he said.

Microsoft has received no reports of users falling victim to the attack. The Redmond, Wash.-based software maker is still investigating the issue and has called in law enforcement to investigate and take action against those responsible, Sohn said.

MSN Gets Ready for RSS Push

Vowing to make RSS friendly to the everyday Web user, an MSN executive demonstrated upcoming services on Wednesday that build syndication feeds into the messaging alerts, a Windows screen saver and Web search.

During a keynote at the Syndicate Conference here, MSN Director Phil Holden said that Microsoft Corp's Internet division is taking RSS (Really Simple Syndication) seriously and will integrate the technology across even more of MSN's online services throughout the year.

"Our goal is in making consumer adoption and consumption of RSS easier," Holden said during an interview. "We will literally put RSS and syndication in many, many places."

MSN already had begun taking steps into RSS in recent months, joining chief portal rival Yahoo Inc. in integrating syndication technology into online services. In January, My MSN began aggregating feeds on personalized home pages, and MSN in March began quietly testing a Web-based RSS aggregator.

Microsoft Releases New MSN Search Toolbar

Microsoft today announced the immediate availability of their MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search.

The updated suite features "Windows Desktop Search" technology, a powerful, easy to use application that indexes users machines allowing them to search within seconds. Using one tool, people can search more than 200 file types on their PC including Outlook and Outlook Express e-mail files; Outlook Contacts or Calendar files; multimedia files; Microsoft Office Word 2003, Microsoft Office Excel 2003 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint® 2003 files; MP3, GIF and JPEG files; Adobe or .PDF files. People can even search e-mail attachments.

In future developers will be able to create addins for the Toolbar suite taking advantage of the plug-in architecture third-party ifilters from http://addins.msn.com to extend the variety of file types that can be indexed and searched.

We exclusively revealed the existence of the MSN Toolbar Suite 2 and Tabbed browsing in Internet Explorer last month. Unfortunately due to a buggy implementation of tabs during Beta the MSN team have prosponed the release, according to an MSN spokesperson the functionality will be available in "the coming months".

For those on Windows XP 64bit it's no surprise that Microsoft have again decided to ditch support for the recently released operating system. Although the beta installed on x64 the final edition isn't supported. It's not clear whether Microsoft plans to support this in the future.

MSN Acquires MessageCast Automated Alerting Services

The MSN network of Internet services today announced that it has acquired substantially all the assets of MessageCast Inc., a leading provider of automated alerting and messaging technology that currently supports the MSN Alerts service. This acquisition builds on the robust MSN Alerts platform, enabling tighter integration with the MessageCast technology. It also extends MSN Alerts to new content channels, helping to expand the ability of MSN to connect consumers to the information and people they care about most.

MSN Alerts empowers consumers to receive time-sensitive information from sources such as MSNBC, Fox Sports, Xbox®, MSN Hotmail®, MSN Money and other content partners. MSN has worked with MessageCast since 2003 to make it easier for content providers to offer free MSN Alerts services to MSN customers. These alerts can be delivered via any combination of MSN Messenger, Microsoft Windows® Messenger, e-mail and text messaging on mobile or handheld devices that are compatible with MSN Mobile. The service is currently offered in Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean and Spanish, and is available throughout the U.S. as well as select markets in Europe and Asia.

"This acquisition is the natural progression of our relationship with MessageCast," said Blake Irving, corporate vice president for the MSN Communication Services and Member Platform group at Microsoft Corp. "Integrating MessageCast's innovative technology, great people and products into MSN will improve our ability to help consumers maintain timely, relevant connections to the information and people that matter most to them."

Microsoft, can you hear me now?

Microsoft says several improvements to its MSN Messenger Internet telephony feature are now available to all users of the tool. The most notable of the changes improve the oft-criticized quality of the voice calls. It's also now possible, Microsoft said, to have voice chats through firewalls, typically a major challenge for voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP.

The improvements, made possible through a partnership Microsoft has with operator Level 3 Communications, were announced by MSN in April as part of the introduction of the latest version of MSN Messenger. Because the improvements use third-party software, there's an expected charge of a few cents a minute.

SMS Messaging for MSN Messenger UK Beta Due Soon

In an email to MSN beta testers, Microsoft have announced plans to start testing SMS (short message service) messaging direct from their popular chat client.

SMS Messaging features were present in previous beta releases of MSN Messenger yet had a variety of restrictions placed on users. With the new beta, the requirement for a passport account to enter a contact has been dropped, and one can simply enter a name and mobile number. As well as this new functionality, a number of new mobile carriers have been added.

Microsoft is targeting the beta at users in the UK, and notes that whilst in beta stages, usage will be free. So far, no public launch date has been announced, or, more importantly, a future pricing system. Microsoft's attempts to "commercialise" elements of MSN Messenger (dynamic display pictures) have been criticised by users for being too expensive and restrictive.

MSN Testing Personalized 'Start' Page

Microsoft's MSN unit is testing what it calls an "incubation experiment" of a new "start" page for Web browsers. The site, located at Start.com, serves as an aggregator for RSS feeds and allows users to custom tailor its content.

The project comes as MSN properties struggle to change a lackluster brand image brought on by fast-moving rivals such as Google. MSN employees recently called on users to give their opinions on what the company can do to improve its perception among early adopters and the media.

In fact, the new Start.com takes a number of pages from Google's playbook. Along with being simple and advertising free, the site draws on RSS technology that is popular among seasoned Web users. It also utilizes advanced HTML for customization and stores preferences as a unique URL, much like Google News.

"This isn't a final product but instead is intended to show people some of the ideas we at MSN are exploring around providing a rich experience around Web-based RSS/Atom aggregation," said MSN Program Manager Dare Obasanjo.

MSN Portal Team member Venkat Narayanan stressed that his team is simply "playing around with a number of different ideas" and pointed out two versions of Start.com currently in consideration.

"We definitely would love to get feedback from folks about the site. I'm personally interested in where people would like to see this sort of functionality integrated into the existing MSN family of sites and products, if at all," said Obasanjo.
